'World No Tobacco Day': Ban Tobacco Advertising, Says WHO

'World No Tobacco Day'

Tobacco presently kills nearly six million people every year and the WHO estimated that the weed will kill more than eight million by 2030. World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), which is observed on May 31 is meant to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption across the globe.

The World Health Organization also called on nations to ban all forms of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship to help reduce the number of tobacco users and keep young people from becoming addicted.

While, one study revealed that chewing tobacco poses a bigger threat than smoking, another study has revealed that an estimated 10 percent of tobacco-related deaths are caused by passive smoking. As per the WHO every year 6 lakh out of 60 lakh deaths due to tobacco are because of second-hand smoke.

Dr Rama Kant, WHO Director-General's Awardee and a senior surgeon said, "In India, 10 lakh people die every year due to tobacco," reported Shailvee Sharda for TNN. As per the global trend, about a lakh people in India may be dying from breathing second-hand smoke.

He added that "Second-hand smoke is the smoke that fills restaurants, offices or other enclosed spaces when people burn tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, 'bidis' and water pipes. There are more than 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, of which at least 250 are known to be harmful and more than 50 are known to cause cancer."

Kant said that "In adults, second-hand smoke causes serious cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, including coronary heart disease and lung cancer. In infants, it causes sudden death. In pregnant women, it causes low birth weight. Almost half of children regularly breathe air polluted by tobacco smoke in public places. Over 40 percent of children have at least one smoking parent. In 2004 WHO data, children accounted for 28 percent of the deaths attributable to second-hand smoke," as reported by TNN.

Douglas Bettcher, director of the WHO's Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases Department, said most tobacco users start their deadly drug dependence before the age of 20.

"Banning tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship is one of the best ways to protect young people from starting smoking as well as reducing tobacco consumption across the entire population," Xinhua quoted Bettcher as saying in a statement.

Research shows that about one-third of youth experiment with tobacco as a result of exposure to tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship. Worldwide, 78 percent of young people aged 13 to 15 have reported regular exposure to some form of tobacco advertising, according to the WHO.

Bettcher said targeting "women and children in developing countries" was the "last frontier" of the tobacco industry.

He warned that the tobacco industry has been finding new tactics to target potential smokers, including handing out free cigarettes, using online and new media, and placement of tobacco products and brands in films and television.

"That is why the ban has to be complete in order to be fully effective," he said.

The WHO's report on the global tobacco epidemic in 2011 showed that only 19 countries have reached the highest level of achievement in banning tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, while more than one third of countries have minimal or no restrictions at all.

According to the "2012 Global Progress Report on Implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)", 83 countries introduced a comprehensive ban on all tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.

Yahoo! to Buy Blogging Site Tumblr for $1.1 Billion: Report

The board of Yahoo! has agreed to a deal to purchase the popular blogging platform Tumblr for $1.1 billion, a newspaper said.

Yahoo! did not immediately return calls for confirmation to the Wall Street Journal report, but CEO Marissa Mayer has scheduled a news conference in New York today at which the company said it will unveil “something special.”

Reports last week said Yahoo! is eyeing the move to attract more users from the key 18- to 24-year-old age bracket, and that the Internet pioneer sees the fast-growing Tumblr as one of the “coolest” sites with young Internet users.

Yahoo! has been looking at a range of acquisitions since Mayer took over as chief executive last year and vowed to revive the company, which has faded in the face of competition from Google.

Founded in 2007 and headquartered in New York, Tumblr says it has more than 107 million blogs, 50 billion postings in 12 languages and 175 employees. The website ranking site Alexa lists Tumblr as number 32 in terms of global popularity.

If the acquisition takes place, it would be the biggest for Yahoo! under Mayer and come in the wake of other pricey deals for startups, such as Facebook’s acquisition of the photo app Instagram for stock worth $1 billion at the time.

Pawan Hans May Enter Commercial Airline Business

State-run helicopter operator Pawan Hans is planning to enter the commercial airline business offering regional connectivity and has already received a go-ahead from its board, a top official has said.

The New Delhi based firm, however, is yet to decide on the business model and the timeline for the proposed venture, the official said.

The country's largest helicopter company, which slipped into the red in the 2012 fiscal, has managed to turnaround with a 7-8 crore net profit (unaudited) in the past fiscal on account of higher efficiencies and cost-cutting.

"Pawan Hans has a mandate from its board as well as the government to go for fixed wing aircraft operations. That is a very challenging opportunity for us," Pawan Hans Chairman Anil Srivastava, who is also a joint secretary in the Aviation Ministry said.

Srivastava said plans are in line for the regional connectivity policy, which envisages providing regional air connectivity to support traffic at larger airports.

The government is in the process of finalising a policy to promote the regional air connectivity and increase air services in the hinterlands, which is expected to be announced in the next three months.

"So, Pawan Hans, in anticipation, intends to play a vital role in the segment. We want to make use of the smaller airstrip lying across the country," Srivastava said.

There are 290-odd airstrips in the country. Of these, some are operational while most of them are unused.

Srivastava, however, said a concrete plan for the company's proposed move is being worked out, adding, "Details such as operation model, fleet size/type of aircraft or whether to go in for scheduled or non-scheduled services are to be finalised."

On investment that would be required for entering commercial aviation, Srivastava said: "The first thing is to develop the skills which are required (to run an airline).

Financial resources are not critical if the company has the skills to manage the business."

"We are operating (as a chopper operator) in a highly competitive market through the open bidding system. We are competing with private operators and are doing well without any government grants.

"The company has the strengths, but we have to develop our strength and skills in the areas of fixed wings planes (operations)," Srivastava said.

One should take the jump but with preparations, he added.

"The company was in a bad shape in FY12 with a loss of 10.35 crore. But we are happy to say that we have sort of turned around with a net profit of around Rs 7-8 crore (unaudited)," Srivastava said.

Attributing the profitable balance sheet to increasing efficiencies of the existing resources, coupled with a series of cost-cutting measures, Srivastava said, "The measures resulted into a net saving of around 9 crore last fiscal."

Even a Parliamentary panel in its report tabled last Friday had said a budgetary support would help the state-owned chopper firm in its expansion plans.

"The committee finds that as against the projected demands of 5 crore under the plan, Pawan Hans was not able to get any budgetary support," the Parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture headed by CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said in its report.

"The committee feels that necessary budgetary support, if given to Pawan Hans, it can take up its capacity building and skill development/expansion projects without delay. The committee feels that the company should expand its business beyond off-shore operations and present itself as a viable air service provider in unexplored tourist destinations," the report said.

Microsoft Confirms Windows Blue Release Later This Year

Microsoft officially has announced an upgrade to its flagship Windows 8 operating system, Windows Blue, the code name given to the updated version is all set to be rolled out by end of this year. Details on the update will be released in few weeks, reports Times Of India.

The company has sold about 100 million Windows 8 licenses till date. Yet it witnessed lesser sales when compared to its earlier version Windows 7, which recorded over 240 million sales in its first year. However, the latter replaced the less popular Windows Vista.
Windows 8 on the other hand, is said to be confusing to customers, due its different look and the ignorance of traditional 'start' button, and this has made the company feel the need for an update.

According to Tami Reller, co-head of Microsoft's Windows unit "The learning curve is real, and we need to address it, We're not sitting back and saying, they will get used to it."
However, Reller did not mention if the update will restore the start button but said, the company would pay attention to help the customers to get adapted to the latest version.

The sale of touch-laptops that supports Windows 8 has also slowed down. As per industry tracker IDC, PC sales faced a record downfall of 14 percent this year. Yet Reller expects firms like Lenovo, ASUS and Hewlett-Packard to change the scenario, which in turn would help a rise in sales for Microsoft.

"We know customers like touch laptops, but they are also price sensitive, Our partners (hardware makers) have to bet on volume, so that they get price breaks, and get that moving into the (retail) channel," said Reller

Windows 8 operating system was primarily designed for touch commands but failed to capture consumer’s attention. Meanwhile, the much anticipated ‘Blue’ update could change the number figures for Microsoft in future.

Over 3, 00,000 Newborns Die within 24 Hrs in India Every Year

With mother’s day around the corner, the State of the World's Mothers report has a fatal story to tell us. The report by Save the Children which published the findings unveils that more than 3, 00,000 babies die within 24 hours of being born in India each year. The reason cited for the incident revolves around carelessness, leading to infections and lack of attentiveness towards the public welfare, reports AFP.

According to the report, India records 29 percent of newborn deaths globally. Of a total of 186 countries, South Asia records 40 percent of the world’s first day deaths. Bangladesh and Pakistan record 28,000 and 60,000 deaths respectively on similar grounds. Malnutrition is the major problem mentioned in both the countries. "Progress has been made, but more than 1,000 babies die every day on their first day of life from preventable causes throughout India, Pakistan and Bangladesh," said Mike Novell, the regional director of the charity, as reported by AFP.

The three major causes for the rise in newborn deaths were revealed as- the complication during pregnancy, unhygienic techniques of delivery and prematurity and lack of advanced technology that can save children in our country. If the above mentioned problems are looked after, there will be a fall of 75 percent in the death statistics.

Facebook May Affect Mental Health, Researchers Warn

Facebook May Affect Mental Health, Researchers Warn

Facebook and other social networking sites may affect your mental health by causing psychotic episodes and delusions, researchers warn. As internet access becomes increasingly widespread, so do psychopathologies such as internet addiction and delusions related to the technology and to virtual relationships, according to the study.

Web-based communication systems such as Facebook and chat groups are an important part of this story, said Dr. Uri Nitzan of Tel Aviv University. According to Nitzan, patients shared some crucial characteristics, including loneliness or vulnerability due to the loss of or separation from a loved one, relative inexperience with technology, and no prior history of psychosis or substance abuse.

In each case, a connection was found between the gradual development and exacerbation of psychotic symptoms, including delusions, anxiety, confusion, and intensified use of computer communications.

The good news is that all of the patients who sought out treatment on their own were able to make a full recovery with proper treatment care, Nitzan said. All three of his patients sought refuge from loneliness and found solace in intense virtual relationships.

Though the relationships were positive at first, they later led to feelings of hurt, betrayal, and invasion of privacy, said Nitzan.

"All three patients developed psychotic symptoms related to the situation, including delusions regarding the person behind the screen and their connection through the computer," he said.

YouTube Soon To Charge For Watching Videos

The world’s biggest video repository, YouTube is apparently on plans to widen its revenue stream. As the first step, the Google owned website may start charging its users for watching particular channels, reports Financial Times.

The in-depth details about ‘paid-for subscription service,’ including subscription fee or channel list are not currently available. However, the fee is expected to be around $2 for a month, which will also give viewers the privilege of watching ad-free entertainment.

YouTube has launched its channels in late 2011. From then, almost every company and even individuals have started YouTube channels. In October 2012, the website has introduced around 60 partner channels, including BBC Worldwide On Earth, ITN, the Jamie Oliver Food Channel and Mixmag TV.

Presently, users can register to any of these channels for free, which will then notify them about a new video, as soon as they login to the website. However, according to the reports, once the new program is launched, only the paid subscribers will be able to watch some exclusive contents, both archived and live, from YouTube’s partner channels.

If success, the paid-for subscription service will be the next strong revenue channel for YouTube, which currently gets most of the money from advertisements.

As per current stats, more than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube every month, watching more than 6 billion hours of video.

Leaked Pictures Of Assumed Google Nexus 5 Hits Online

The latest leak from ‘evleaks’ – a Twitter user with a record of Smartphones is reportedly making news after it carried pictures of a Smartphone, which is presumably LG Optimus 2 or Google Nexus 5. While it was thought that the upcoming next-gen Optimus G2 was here, there were also talks about LG and Google partnering to bring out an LG Nexus 5 device.

The new handset, according to Android Authority’s Chris Smith would sport a 5.5 inch display and will hit the markets in fourth quarter of this year as LG has just announced its current flagship - Optimus G Pro in the U.S.

Meanwhile AnTuTu Benchmark database showed a number of unknown LG Optimus G2 versions being tested out. These handsets namely – LG-F340L, LG-F320L and LG-F320K were seen with 1.5GHz or 2GHz processors, running either Android 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 versions. These devices looked like Korean versions of LG’s mysterious phones but getting to know the actual specifications by a model number as reported by Smith was a major guessing game itself.

As with the phone, there are no hardware buttons on it and that it is said to be charged via a USB 2.0 connection below it. The logo would be seen at the bottom instead at the top and the primary speaker is placed a little bit lower as compared to the phone’s top border as in Optimus G Pro. On the whole the Smartphone will come in a size of around 2.5 by 5 inches.
